In 2023, the National Gambling Helpline in the UK received over 52,000 phone calls.

In 2023, the National Gambling Helpline experienced an unprecedented volume of calls. GamCare officially reported that a total of 52,370 calls and online chats were received by the helpline.

The graph shows a 24% rise from the previous year and emphasizes the greater awareness of the support services provided by the helpline. According to GamCare, August received the highest number of calls, making it the busiest month. Conversely, December was the most hectic Christmas for GamCare, with a 39% increase compared to the previous year.

GamCare observed that many calls received during the holiday season were from individuals worried about a loved one’s gambling habits, as well as from those who had difficulty watching television with family due to gambling advertisements. Additionally, 117 calls were made by individuals expressing concern about the current cost of living.

The addition of the helpline’s WhatsApp channel also increased its exposure, resulting in 6,000 more interactions.

In 2023, TalkBanStop, which is a collaboration between GamCare, Gamban, and GAMSTOP, provided nearly 7,000 free licenses for Gamban blocking software.

“The People Reaching Out” organization’s “Landmark Climb” is a positive event.

Samantha Turnton, the head of remote support services at GamCare, noted that her team typically observes slight annual increases in the number of individuals contacting the helpline. However, in 2023, there was a significant surge in individuals reaching out to the helpline, marking a noteworthy increase in those seeking help to begin their recovery journey.

According to Turnton, the numbers may appear worrisome, but he also pointed out that a positive aspect is that a growing number of individuals are seeking help at an earlier point, making it easier to intervene.

Taking this step is crucial in stopping the negative effects of gambling from worsening over time, and we urge individuals to reach out if they are prepared to talk about their connection with it, regardless of where they currently stand.

Turnton mentioned that her team is readily available to provide assistance.

Anna Hargrave, the officer in charge of commissioning and strategy at GambleAware, added her thoughts on the issue, stating that the rise in phone calls coincides with the debut of the National Gambling Support Network. She believes this highlights the vital role of preventive and early intervention services.

It is important to prioritize these support services in the new system when the statutory gambling levy is implemented, as we understand the urgency of early intervention in assisting individuals who are beginning to experience gambling harm, before it escalates into a more severe issue.
