The European team has a strong advantage heading into the final day of singles matches at the Ryder Cup.

On Sunday, the Ryder Cup will come to a close in Rome, Italy, at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club. It is likely that the Europeans will emerge as the winners and claim the highly-prized trophy.

Team Europe had a strong start to the 44th Ryder Cup Matches, winning five out of eight matches on Friday and tying the other three. This gave them a five-point lead going into Saturday’s foursomes and fourball events.

The host team continued their winning streak on Saturday morning, winning three out of four alternate shot matches. The standout performance of the morning was Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg’s dominant 9&7 victory over Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka. Rory McIlroy maintained his undefeated record with a 2&1 win alongside Tommy Fleetwood against Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth.

In the 2023 Ryder Cup, Max Homa and Brian Harman secured the first win for the US team with a 4&2 victory over Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka. Later on, Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton claimed a victory for the European team against Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele in the Saturday morning session.

Afternoon Comeback

During the fourball round on Saturday afternoon, the United States made a comeback. Sam Burns and Collin Morikawa defeated Hovland and Aberg 4&3, while Homa and Harman teamed up again to defeat Fleetwood and Nicolai Hojgaard 2&1.

In the third round, Europe was able to briefly hinder the US’s progress when Justin Rose and Robert MacIntyre defeated Thomas and Spieth with a score of 3&2.

McIlroy’s perfect performance at the 2023 Ryder Cup was disrupted by Cantlay, who sank two birdie putts on the 17th and 18th holes to narrowly win by one point alongside his partner, Wyndham Clark. McIlroy was unable to make his birdie putt on the 18th hole, while his teammate, Matt Fitzpatrick, also fell short with his attempt.

With only 12 individual matches remaining and Europe ahead by five points, sportsbooks in both the US and abroad agree that the home team is the favored bet.

DraftKings is offering odds of -1000 for Europe, indicating a 91% likelihood of winning. A $100 bet would only result in a $10 profit. In comparison, William Hill, a well-known bookmaker in the UK and Europe, has even lower odds for Europe at -1200. This means that a $100 wager would only yield a payout of $8.33 if Europe wins tomorrow.

DraftKings has odds of +1000 for the US, while William Hill has odds of +1200. If a $100 bet is placed and an incredible comeback occurs, the winnings would be $1,000 and $1,200 respectively.

In 1999, the most notable comeback in Ryder Cup history occurred at the Country Club in Brookline, MA. The Americans were able to overcome a four-point deficit and shock the Europeans with a final score of 14.5-13.5.
